Painted illusion of stonework and plants. Base of the serpent.
A real potted bouganvilla (bottom left) grows up to join the painted illusion of bouganvilla (the rest of the bouganvilla visible in this photo.)
Note the fallen (painted) blossom and moss on the (real) 1-inch ledge at the bottom of the photo. It is one of my favorite tricks to make flat painted objects traverse and "fill" real physical planes.
