"Riddle Box"
Hand-lacquered alderwood stand
Stand is approx. 16" wide
ca. 1988
Hand-lacquered stand with 23k gold leaf inscription and marble top for a client's existing Indian scuplture.
Pedestal by Anton.
Elephant sculpture by unknown.
I wrote a poem which is inscribed in solid gold around the box. It is both a philosophy and a riddle about mankinds insatiability.
The riddle on the exterior reads:
A work of art, however grand,
Though brought to light by godly hands,
Though praised and loved by every man,
Is much enriched by where it stands.
For eyes that take but what they see,
Nothing more is offered thee.
For eyes that look beyond the skin,
A greater prize awaits within.
The riddle-response on the interior reads:
This the prize. You've fared quite well,
For clever eyes doth fog dispell.
Yet, if a treasure does not quell,
Mirrors that stand parallel
Demonstrate the problem well.
