"Suspended Mantle"
Glazed Cedar
approx 8 ft. wide
ca. 1988
Preliminary carving was done with a chainsaw. Final cuts were made with a very simple straight chisel.
The mantle is cantilevered from inside the wall and could hold the weight of adults sitting along its entire length. Yet, for house-painting, the mantle can be disassembled by one person and removed from the two gate hooks that hold it on the wall.
The plaster moulding around the fireplace opening was hand-drawn (wet plaster pulled across a table with a profile blade) for me by professional plasterers at Universal Film studios just for this project. I then installed it in the house.
Private residence.
