"Hill Livingroom Mantle"
Oil on primed plaster
approx. 20 ft. high
ca. 1989
The Hills imported a 300 year-old stone mantle and hearth from England which, large as it was, needed to be scaled up to look right in their 22 ft.-high livingroom.
This meant extending the chimney facing up another 12 feet and moving the entire hearth forward about a foot. The contractors accomplished this with a framework covered in plasterboard.
It was up to me to match the stone color and texture in the chimney extending upward and the extensions between the wall and the hearth at ground level where it would be subject to close human inspection.
The result was perfect in all but the physical temperature of the painted stone.
